Sorry for the delay since the last update -- things have been pretty busy.

The updated API documentation is available at the following URL:
http://www.jaet.org/jat/slimp3/

I took the various comments from the last posting and hopefully I have
come up with a reasonable compromise which allows for more advanced
functionality for those willing to invest the time in data entry while not
overly burdening those that don't care about it or the callers to the
backend.

Key changes since the last post:
o Composite artists are supported, allowing for a particular artist to
be composed of other artists in particular roles. For example, this
could be used for duets to have a single artist object (since most
uses of this object will just be to display or search for matches)
while still preserving the information that there are two separate
artists. This could also be used to keep track of which artists in
a group play which instruments or other roles for classical music,
or arbitrary other involvement in a group.
o Support for additional artists in particular roles on both songs and
albums. In addition to the primary artist, an arbitrary list of other
artists and their roles may be kept for each album and song.
o Duplicate songs in playlists, with an API for manipulating the playlist
based on position.
o Export playlists to an external file.

I have not finished updating the DBI backend for these changes, but it
isn't far off.

Comments appreciated.

It's been a while since I looked at it. It tends to break when Scan.pm gets
modified. I'll look at it tonight.

Negative. I tried a shortcut (Windows 98) and the music folder it
linked to wasn't recognized.
-Andrew
You should be able to put Shortcuts (on Windows), Aliases (on Macs)
or symlinks (on Unices) to accomplish this.
-dean
(Replying to a rather old message...)
Actually, there is a need -- in my case, I've got two separate
drives that I want my SliMP3 to be able to play from. I don't see an
easy way to specify two separate folders, two separate drives, or
anything else like that. Am I stuck getting a still-larger drive to
hold everything, or are there folks working on a way to do this? (I
can't believe I'm the first -- or maybe second -- person to run into
this...
Thanks,
Andrew
You typically specify your root directory and the descend the
directory
tree using the remote or the web interface. There is no need to
specify
multiple directories in the config...
eg.
/home +
|
+ /mp3 +
| |
| + /jazz +
| | |
| | + bar.mp3
| | + xyz.mp3
| + /rock
| + my.pls
| + my.mp3
|
+ /foo
In this case, your root would be /home/mp3. When you navigate, you
will
see the folders 'jazz' and 'rock', with a '+' next to them rather
than a
note. Playlists are treated like folders and mp3's just
appear as mp3's.
HTH,
Chris.
Does the server support having MP3s in multiple directories?
When I did the
config it didn't appear that it did.

It's been a while since I looked at it. It tends to break when Scan.pm gets
modified. I'll look at it tonight.

Dev folk,

I thought that this was supposed to work. Doesn't it?

|
| |
| | |
|

Andrew,

Can you try using Windows 98 shortcuts again and give us more details
about the problem you are having?

It was working for Robert on his Win98 SE system.

Shortcuts seem to mostly work for me. I tested both the web interface and
the Slim interface. I tried shortcuts to directories under the Music root,
directories on the same drive but not under the Music root, directories on
another drive in my system, and directories on a networked computer.
Browsing through the shortcut works, backwards and forwards, including
going into genre/artist/album from track info and ascending all the way
back to the root. Hitting play/rec on the shortcut (play/add to playlist
from the web) works.
Shortcuts to individual mp3s do not work from either interface.
Play/add to playlist (and play/rec) on the directory containing the
shortcut does not follow the shortcut to get its songs.
I would prefer not to see the .lnk from either interface (ie, trim the
extension from the TITLE in the info cache).
And might I add, I was newly creating these shortcuts, then refreshing my
browser. The shortcuts immediately showed up and worked.
