Discussion:
Playing, Pausing, Blanking

Ok, I hear you. How about if there's a single character of a period
on the display? Something, anything, throw me a bone here...
Well to me, I agree with you, no blank screen while the player is on. I
think it's daft and stupid. But people on here asked for it (or one person
on here asked for it, so he could sleep with it on and music playing), which
is the only reason I brought it up.

Personally I don't have any problem sleeping with the player on (and it's
right beside my bed) with the display at it's dimmest. And if I did, well
there's always the option of throwing a book over it. :)

Um, doesn't that contradict your first comment? :-) I do feel
strongly that the screen shouldn't blank all the way when the power
is on.
I know people on the list asked for this, they want a blank screen, but
still playing music, so they can sleep with it on (and playing). This way,
it allows them to do it. The difference is that they deliberately made it
blank. It didn't just go blank all of a sudden. The control is moved over to
the user.

I didn't know that. What's wrong with the connection to make it fail?
Can't call method "read" on an undefined value at server.pl line 402.
It's because the stream it's trying to connect to isn't available. But
rather than telling me that on the screen like it perhaps should, "Stream
Unavailable", it crashes. Might be nice to have the display say
"Connecting..." well it's trying?
Good. Sean wants to wait until after this release to pound on the
streaming stuff.
Plus, when adding a directory to your playlist, if no track numbers in the
ID3 tags it adds it in ID3 track name order (alphabetical), even though the
file names have the right numbers at the beginning. Or am I dreaming? (I
think it did this a few days ago, but I can't find which one of my albums
was done that way).
Entirely possible. Can you write this up as a bug? The streaming
crash too? Also the dim to blank one... Hard to keep track here...

Right on. I'll take care of it.
Excellent. You should add the ability for the brightness to go down to blank
when on (as well as off) at the same time, for those that wanted to sleep
with the unit on, but music still playing.

We discussed this a bit before and the consensus was that we need
_some_ way of distinguishing playlists from directories. .pls/.m3u
is one way to do this, but there's probably a better one. I'll think
on this more...
Two musical icons at the end of the line instead one sounds like a good
option to me.
Good idea!
I have just found that the server crashes if it can't connect to a stream,
or is that one already known?
I didn't know that. What's wrong with the connection to make it fail?

I think we've probably been round this issue a few times already, but I just
tried with the latest code Dean checked in, and I think the screensaver is
confusing and annoying. Why should the screen go blank when the player is
on? It's confusing from a user point of view to have something appear to
switch off, when it's actually on.
That's an excellent point. The screen saver probably shouldn't kick
in if nothing is in the playlist. I don't often have nothing on my
playlist so I never really had this problem. :-)
Displaying what its currently playing (or currently paused on) after 15
seconds is good, but there is still the same problem that if I then go and
press another button, it executes what I was on before it started displaying
it. While in fact it should just ignore the button press and switch back to
where it was before it started showing me what was currently playing.
Another good point. The first button press should kick it out of the
screen saver. I think that somebody mentioned this on the list, but
I never got around to doing anything about it.
So I propose that after 15 seconds if not playing anything, then it
shouldn't do anything. Just sit there on what I leave it at. If I am playing
something, then revert to what I'm playing every 15 seconds (as it does at
the moment). But in both cases, ignore the action of whatever button I then
press, just bring it out of that state.
Right on. I'll take care of it.
We should also remove .pls from the end of playlists, since we already
remove .mp3 from the end of MP3 files in both modes (ID3 and file name view)
and it looks untidy with it there.
We discussed this a bit before and the consensus was that we need
_some_ way of distinguishing playlists from directories. .pls/.m3u
is one way to do this, but there's probably a better one. I'll think
on this more...
Still hunting for bugs, none to report so far.

on? It's confusing from a user point of view to have something appear to

If we changed it for those people that want the screen off so they can
sleep, then it's not needed because they can just switch off the player and
turn the brightness down to blank? And if they want the music to keep
playing while they sleep, doesn't it make more sense for us to add the
ability for people turn the brightness down to blank when it's on too? (and
at least they'll then know it's blank because they blanked it). Blanking
while the player is on goes against the rules of most other equipment
because it now looks like it's off when it's not really. Even more
confusing, is if it goes blank, and then I press a button to make it come
back, it brings it back AND executes that button - so unless I remember
where I was, then I'm not going to know what its going to do.

Displaying what its currently playing (or currently paused on) after 15
