Discussion:
Another Display Posibility......

Further to my initial thoughts to the way the display system can work, I
thought of another possible option for this......

Currently when you press the DISPLAY button, it alternates between ID tag
and the filename.

What if pressing DISP alternates between adjusting the top or bottom line
of the display. Each time you press display, it changes between the top &
bottom line by making that line flash every half second or to (this way you
know which line you are about to adjust the properties of). Once its
flashing, you can use the UP/DOWN arrows to scroll between all the
available options for that line. Once you have finished, just leave it, and
after like 5 seconds, it stops flashing and uses that setting.

For instance, if you wanted to adjust the top line of the display, press
the DISP button and the top line flashes, then pressing the UP/DOWN button
will scroll between the following possible options

* Standard With Counter (ie, Now Playing/Playlist bit & (12 of 18) counter)
* Standard Without Counter
* Top 2 Directories With Counter (great withg a BIG random queue/playlist)
* Top 2 Directories Without Counter
* Time Display Elapsed / Bitrate Display
* Time Display Remaining / Bitrate Display

When you have settled on the display you want, leave it for 5 seconds and
it remembers that top line display until its changed next.

And if you wanted to adjust the bottom line of the display, press the DISP
button twice and the bottom line flashes, then pressing the UP/DOWN button
will scroll between the following possible options

* File Name Modified (ie, _ replaced with spaces, no .mp3 etc)
* File Name Raw (exactly as it appears on the drive with _ and .mp3)
* ID Tag Song Name Only
* ID Tag Song Name & Artist

When you have settled on the display you want, leve it for 5 seconds and it
remembers the bottom line display until its changed next.

Just some more random thoughts that others may think are worthwhile
possibilities.

Cheers

I was using my SliMP3 unit last night and was half in a daze as I was
falling asleep, but still awake enough to skip past any stray Britney songs
that managed to get onto my drive :)
And I was thinking that there are alot of cool options/implementations that
the SliMP3 player can do as far as the physical display goes, but having a
single display button yet 2 lines on the player which could have different
display options makes it a little tough.
So what I was thinking was to make the display button launch like a display
menu on the alternate display line and make it toggle between adjusting the
top and bottom lines on each press of the display button...... So it would
look like these 2 examples
Toggle 1 adjusts the top line of the SliMP3 unit
--------------------------------------------------------------------
LN1 | Top Line Display Modification |
LN2 | 1 : Choices Available |
Available Choices for the top line that I personally would love to be able
1 : Standard With Counter (ie, the (12 or 18) counter)
2 : Standard Without Counter
3 : Top 2 Directories With Counter (great when playing a BIG random queue)
4 : Top 2 Directories Without Counter
5 : Time Display Elapsed / Bitrate Display
6 : Time Display Remaining / Bitrate Display
--------------------------------------------------------------------
LN1 | Bottom Line Display Modification |
LN2 | 1 : Choices Available |
Available Choices for the top line that I personally would love to be able
1 : File Name Modified (ie, _ replaced with spaces, no .mp3 etc)
2 : File Name Raw (exactly as it appears on the drive)
3 : ID Tag Song Name Only
4 : ID Tag Song Name & Artist
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Now its been WAY too long since ive actually looked at the code (havent
played with it since like version 1.1) but now I have recently resigned
from my job of 5 years and have a little bit of time up my sleeve, I will
have a look further into this, but I thought I would email the list to see
if what Ive said above, number one, is something anyone else would like as
a feature, and number two, is possible at all.
Cheers

Hi Chris,
This is really interesting thinking.
The basic model I've been working with was that the first line is
always "context", telling the user where they are while navigating
the SliMP3 user interface space. The second line describes a single
item within that space. The user can move around in a given
"context" by pressing the UP and DOWN buttons and move in and out of
a context (or zoom in and out) by pressing the RIGHT and LEFT
buttons, respectively. Keeping this consistent gives the user a
grounding so that they always know where they are and have an idea of
how to get to the information that they want.
Yeah I understand this type of thinking which in general is nice, and
probably the most used option. However Ive found that different times, I
could have done with modifying the top line display to show other things.

For example. My mp3 layout is very subdirectory layed out. and if I decide
to play a random selected from a low directory, there might be like 1200
files in the random playlist. Alot of the songs I have in MP3, I dont know
who they are, or what album they are off. If I had the option to switch the
top line display over to the last 2 directory structures instead of the
'context' display would be fantastic.

I think by default the context display should always be the default and
generic display, but having the options would be a great way to provide
solutions to any users requirements.
One thing we talked about earlier was allowing the user to navigate
"into" a song (i.e. press the RIGHT button when the song is displayed
on the second line). My thinking was that if you did that you would
then have the song title on the top line and then could use the
UP/DOWN buttons to rotate through additional information, like Album
Title, Artist, Duration, Bitrate, Filename, etc... In this case the
context would be the song, and the items within that context would be
information about that song.
or even an option for the 2nd display line in the menu could even be a 1-2
second rotating display..... Rotating between
Song Title | Album Title | Dutation / Bitrate
and every 1-2 seconds the 2nd line alters the display.
I like the idea of using the display button to cycle through some
display options at any time in the navigation, as long as it's
consistent with the navigational space. One idea that we both seem
to like is using the DISPLAY button to cycle through additional
information (like "1 of 10" counters and "03:02" timers). I wonder
how this would work if you were in the settings area or scrolling
through a playlist vs. browsing through the music hierarchy...
The idea I had initially was to have the display button simply toggle
between changing the 1st and 2nd line display options. Keep pressing the
Display button until it shows the Line you want to change, and below it
shows all available options for that display line. Then use the UP/DOWN
arrows to select which option they want, and when you are happy, press the
RIGHT arrow to select that option.

Anyhoooo... Im off for a night of Trivia at the local, so ill think some
more on it, and maybe ill get a chance tonight to squizz at the code some more.

Cheers

Chris
