Discussion:
"Double size" display characters?

I see a couple of problems.

The biggest problem is the glitching that takes place when custom
characters are in use. Of course that needs to be fixed regardless,
but it would be really distracting with big characters flickering.

The other problem is that you only get 20 chars to write your
date/time in, so the current format wouldn't work so we'd need to
switch to something like _mm/dd/yy__hh:mm:ss_

Other than than I like it.
Yep - this would look great for the clock.
That is a good idea. I bet we could make it look even better
with a
couple of custom charachters...
I saw this on the audiotron mailing list. Might be a good idea
for
the SliMP3? It would be nice to press a remote key and throw it
into "old person font." <laughing>

It is not totally unworkable, even if on a character based
display.

|¯) (¯ ¯T¯ | | \ / \ / \/ \ / ¯/
|¯\ _) | \_/ \/ \/\/ /\ | /_
This uses just 10 differn't ascii characters ()/\¯_|7XT Which,
when combined the right way, using 2 lines, gives a halfway
decent
representation of the alphabet, especially when you view it from
across the room. I would even settle for this, however ugly it
may be (using these characters) over the tiny unreadible display
we now have.
I'm not sure how the LCD works, but if its possible to change the
font, you could create better "pieces" to assemble into a much
better looking large character display. Back in my early computer
programming days in college, we had real, honest-to-goodness
VT100
terminals on a Vax system, and it even came with a special font
to
use to make 4 block letters using this sort of method, which
people
had hours of fun using to create large messages to leave on the
displays
when they logged out.

It is not totally unworkable, even if on a character based display.
Consider:

/¯\ |¯) /¯¯ |¯\ |_¯ |¯¯ /¯ |_| | | |/ | |\/| |\ | /¯\ |¯) /¯\
|¯| |_) \__ |_/ |__ |¯ \_7 | | | \/ |\ |_ | | | \| \_/ |¯ \_X

|¯) (¯ ¯T¯ | | \ / \ / \/ \ / ¯/
|¯\ _) | \_/ \/ \/\/ /\ | /_

This uses just 10 differn't ascii characters ()/\¯_|7XT Which,
when combined the right way, using 2 lines, gives a halfway decent
representation of the alphabet, especially when you view it from
