Discussion:
Works on a "new" platform: MacOS X 10.1

Normal (defined as the default: play track/list and stop)
Repeat One (repeat current track)
Repeat All (repeat current "playlist", be it album, custom list, etc)
Turns out that I already implemented this as the RECALL button. Try it!

I'm working on getting the display to indicate something briefly when
you press this button (and others) so you aren't pressing them blind.
Play Rest (also play the rest of the stuff in the current dir and
stop)
I'm not sure how this is different from Normal, above.
Randomize (if in "playlist" of some sort)
You can do this by pressing the PIP button to browse the playlist,
then press the OK button to randomize the current playlist. (The
thinking was that the OK button was the "random play" button already
when browsing.

The Guide button would be good for MP3 information, length and stuff. An
updating display with the time (elapsed/remaining) would be nice, with FF
and RW skipping through the song in the relevant direction. That's the most
intuitive for somebody who is used to using a VCR and such.
I think the info might already be covered by the right arrow button. But I
agree that it would be nice to have a mode whereby you could use the <<
and >> buttons to fast-forward and reverse *within* a track rather than
skipping tracks (which I think should be the default behavior for those
buttons). That special mode could display the elapsed and total times as
well as potentially a visual progress bar. You could support 2x 4x 8x as
well I suppose.

Perhaps this mode could be one of our default DISP modes? (with the
ability to turn if off per SliMP3 if desired) Save a button that way...

So many ideas! So little time!

Numbers, like somebody else said, would make good playlist selectors, being
able to save playlists to each button would be good.
I like it.
My idea was actually for an unlimited number of playlists (OK.. some very
large number) by punching a number value and hitting enter when done. That
way we can many more playlists and base them on numbers that are easier
for humans to remember. (ie 666<ENTER> could fire up my NIN playlists,
54<ENTER> could fire up some disco, 42<ENTER> some deep-thinking ambient
stuff, 69<ENTER> some romantic tunes... etc. Maybe a friends phone number
could be used to store a playlist of their favorites, etc)
Allows for the potential of secret playlists as well.

When you start punching the numbers it could show you what you were
typing in as you went:

Playlist: 66_

It could cancel the playlist sesection if 5 seconds pass since the last
number entry and ENTER hasn't been pressed yet or any other button is
pressed (which would cause that other thing to happen instead).
Repeat on/off should be TV/Video. It's easy to remember that, and makes it
easy when Sean changes to custom remotes. The display should of course say
that you're switching it on/off.
Gotcha.
Too bad about TV/VIDEO not working with the codes, and nobody likes my
"play" button idea... oh well. Something else then I guess.

But could we call it the "Play Mode" button and provide for:

Normal (defined as the default: play track/list and stop)
Repeat One (repeat current track)
Repeat All (repeat current "playlist", be it album, custom list, etc)
Play Rest (also play the rest of the stuff in the current dir and
stop)
Randomize (if in "playlist" of some sort)

A quick look back at emails from me will note that I already mentioned this.
:)
Sorry, I missed that...
On topics mentioned earlier, I agree right on the remote doesn't make sense
for playing. But I also think that when you press play on a song it should
only play that song, and if people want to play the whole album, they should
press play on the directory.
Numbers, like somebody else said, would make good playlist selectors, being
able to save playlists to each button would be good.

Gotcha.
There also appears to be a bug at the moment with repeat. I like if off, but
when it is, the display doesn't update to display the song it's playing as
it goes through them, it just sticks on the first one. But if repeat is on,
it displays fine. I tried looking at the code to fix it, but have limited
time, and couldn't see it.
Can you file this on sourceforge?

Great - I tested it a long time ago on OSX, but I haven't tried 1.6
running on 10.1. It should work fine on any Unixish system.

BTW is anyone familiar with iTunes and its database system? I showed the
player to some guys at Apple last month (informally), and they were very
interested in somehow integrating it with iTunes.

Just copied the slimp3 server code to my Powerbook running MacOS X
10.1, ran setup.pl then server.pl and boom, it just worked!
